Certainly the situation that those people find themselves in is not a good one. However they are in the TRNC. This is the Turkish republic of Northern Cyprus which is not recognised by the majority of other countries.
We are in Southern Cyprus, but there are equally bad property scandals in this section. One in a nutshell, is that although you may have paid all the money to a builder the property is not yours until you get the deeds. (easy to understand so far)
But with a new property it is around 5 years before the deeds are ready to be transferred to you and then you have to pay a hefty fee for them.
There are many problems over here with property.
Cheers. Trev..

Hi All. I just thought that I would add little bit more to this thread about life in Cyprus. It sure gets a little depressing at times. I think on this threads early days I may have said that we had bought a plot of land to build a home on. We cannot apply for planning permission because one bit of the road to the plot is not a 'public road' and the government offices are 10 years behind with surveying pieces of road like this. We were told that if we paid for a private surveyor to do the work it would cut the delay to months. So we paid a Surveyor over 2,000 euros to do the governments work. He has done this over about 6 months and his 'measurements' have been submitted to the land office. We have been a couple of times to see how things are progressing, and yesterday we were presented with bad news. The working / findings of our Surveyor can go no further because they have no staff to enter the calculation onto the computerised map. There were two men doing this work, but now they have left and that is it. ALL STOP until they recruit more qualified staff. As you will appreciate we are a little bit downhearted to say the least. We are just at a dead end and can do no more. On the up side........ It is now wall to wall sunshine with the temp around 28c. we have bought some more outside furniture so that we can enjoy the sunshine, although most of the time you do actually sit in the shade, hence the umbrella. And although they are not evident in the pics, I have bought a few plant to add to the ones the landlord has here. Don't forget to organise the sunshine for my trip to the Morecambe area next month. June will soon be here, and I will soon be there. Here are a couple of pics taken recently of the front of our (rented) home. Oh, and here is a picture of our favourite Value For Money Taverna, that I have mentioned before in connection with good Sunday Lunches. Regards from Trev..

Is buying property just as fraught with problems?

Hi Keith. Yes it does seem that it can be. Many transactions no doubt go through with no problems. But what can happen here is that when you buy a property, especially a new on you do not get the Title Deeds. This means that the Developer is the actual owner, even though you have paid ALL the money. Sometimes it can e 5 or 6 years before the Title Deeds are available from the Land / planning office to transfer the ownership to the buyer. The cost of this transfer is usually in the 5 to 10 thousand Euro region.
We were initially going to buy a 'resale'. But having bought a piece of land we really do not have enough money left to do that now. We are between a rock and a hard place.
Regards. Trev..

Crikey Trev. I thought the wheels of beurocracy turned slowly in Ireland but it sounds like Cyprus beats it hands down. That must be so incredibly frustrating to have the land and not be able to do anything with it.
Does look like you are having some lovely weather though. It's cold wet and horrible here. Maybe it will buck up a bit when you come over.

Well I certainly hope that you get all the horrible weather over with before my trip on the 8th of June.
A question for those in the Morecambe area probably.
Whilst I am on my visit I am going on a mini buying spree. One of the items that I need is a new pair of black shoes. Now I have pretty much always bought 'Clarks' shoes in the past, at a not too dear price.
Does anyone have an idea where these may be available in the general area. Or do you think I should just have a good look around.
I will be looking for good deals on spectacles whilst I am there, but of course I can visit Opticians sites on line to check them out.
Cheers. Trev..

Hi All. Well in my post of May 19th. I told you all about the problems we have over getting planning permission for our plot of land. "all stop" were the words I used I believe.
Well here is a Update........
We have bee again to the land office and they said although they cannot put things on the plans of the area, we should apply for planning permission. They said that when the planning department enquire they will explain and all should be OK.
We double checked by going and asking at the planning office. A top man there checked with our 'Lady' architect, and again told us to apply and all should be OK.
So today wee have travelled the 100 or so Kilometres to see the architect and sign all the documents for a planning application.
However it turns out that the man in the planning office is a good friend of the Architect. That has got to be a good thing, so things are looking a little more upbeat now.
We will keep our fingers crossed and see what happens in a month or so.
Only a few days now until I am over there with you all. I hope to see as many as possible of you at the 'Meet up' on the 11th.
Till then, Best Wishes to you all. Trev.. (in Cyprus)

Keith.... Good she is, but not that good. And yes it does sound a little better Willow. I need to put these troubles to one side for a couple of weeks whilst I have my well earned UK visit. I thought I would see what the weather had in store for me as I know you have been a little overheated recently. I had a look at the 15 day forecast!!! www.accuweather.com/world-forecast-15day.asp?partner=netweather&traveler=0&locCode=EUR|UK|UK166|Lancaster&metric=1YOU CANNOT BE SERIOUS!! Have you seen those temperatures. When does your summer start over there. Or was that it a couple of days ago. I think i will bring some long trousers and a jacket. I will swap my sandals for shoes and socks as well. See you soon. Brrrrrrr Trev..
