Hi all. Some of you will know that we have just moved from one rental to another in a different village. As a little interest has been shown on another thread re our cleaning marathon I thought I would start a new thread. The main reason for moving was the damp in the first premises. When we inspected it 2 year ago it seemed to be fine. But during the first winter and certainly the second one, rising damp appeared. Until recently they did not bother with a damp proof course in Cyprus. Perhaps because the winters are short and the summers are long and hot, So I have put five pics on here. The first two are outside two years ago, and the other three are the state of the damp in the building now, with the plaster falling off the walls. Next time I will add some pictures of our new rental property, where we hope we will be a little dryer and warmer in winter. Best wishes. Trev..

Ironic that you probably left the UK to get away from the damp. It would have been a whole lot worse Trevor, if you had bought the place! I never would have thought that damp would be a problem in Cyprus. You'll be telling us next, that the yobs from the local council estate keep pulling up your plants

Renting in Cyprus is to us a sensible first step. It is not that we set out to be permanent renters, it is just that we could not find a property to suit all our requirements. Damp is a problem here, at least rising damp in the buildings is. Re.... "You'll be telling us next, that the yobs from the local council estate keep pulling up your plants "
That is not a usual thing out here, especially in the villages. We are about 10 miles / 15 mins from the main town of Paphos. in those suburbs you occasionally hear of local youths giving the local ex pats a hard time, but it is rare. In many ways Cyprus is like the UK 20 to 30 years ago...... That is one of the reasons for coming here. In the villages you still see Donkeys in the village streets.

It looks a lot warmer there than it's been here tonight. We just got back from a very chilly and breezy Morecambe where we went to a concert.
I see your point about the damp. If there's one thing I can't stand it's rising damp. We seem to be plagued with it a lot here in Accrington in the older properties but I'd never have imagined it being a problem in Cyprus.

It certainly is still comparatively warm here. It is nearly bedtime and is 22c inside at the moment, with no heat on obviously. Most people have their doors and patio windows open in the daytime. We have to have ours closed at the moment.
The reason for that is that when we moved here on the 13th we brought a stray cat with us that we had been feeding for well over a year. We took advise and have kept him indoors for the last two weeks. Sometime next week we will let him out, but it will be a heart rending day if he runs off. We are even more attached to him now than we were before. We always used to put him out at night (box in garage). But now he is sleeping with us, so you can see how much we love him. There's another little facet of our move that you are up to date with.
Sorry about your weather at the moment, according to 3 webcams I use.
Goodnight for now and remember, PUT YOUR CLOCKS BACK!!
Best wishes. Trev..

Hi All. The site seems to very quiet today. Perhaps you have all been wringing your sock out. I thought I would introduce you to our new rental property with a few pics. By the way I was looking at Carnforth rentals on the web. There is a 2 up and 2 down terraced rental advertised for only a few pounds less than we are paying for our 4 bed detached. Here are three outside views . Some things to note that we soon become accustomed to here. Although you cannot see it the telephone cable is underground. You can see the 3 phase electric wires, they are overhead on poles. And if you look to the left of the gate way you will see a little louvred door. This is where we keep the bin and it is collected twice a week. I will post more pictures as the days go on, to give you a little insight as to how an ex Morecambrian is living now. Regards. Trev..

Good morning All. Our new rental does look a lot better than the old one. It is a 4 bed detached with three bathrooms. I will put some inside pictures on when we get a little more organised, and some of the views, and village. The front balcony is from our bedroom and on a clear day we can see the sea, down near Paphos airport. But it is a long way off. From the rear of the property we can see mount Olympus, which is the highest point on the island. In Winter and Spring they have skiing up there complete with a ski lift. You can sometimes ski in the morning, and then make your way to the coast and swim in the sea in the afternoon. I will add more pictures as time goes on. Regards. Trev..

Ah Mount Olympus, home of the gods.
How far do you actually have to travel to get to the sea?

I have just been on 'Google Earth' and measured the distance to the harbour at Paphos, from our home. This is just about the nearest sea that we can drive to. It is 10 miles away from where we live. Although as residents here we rarely go to see the sea, we do make the journey to Paphos 3 or 4 times a week. The main hospital is there and also the main shops and supermarkets. One of the trips we make is to a quiz which is held in a bar / restaurant. We have a 'set menu' meal and then we do the quiz. It is usually 11-30pm by the time we get home.

I love the sea. It may have something to do with not living near enough to see it and loving every chance I get to visit the coast. I probably take the scenery round here for granted as I have known visitors to say how lovely the hills are but I'd much rather have a view of the coast. ;D

You can't knock the scenery round Accrington Willow, we had some friends visit us from London years ago and they were amazed that there were trees there. I assume the trees are still there.

Coachman reckons there are no trees in Accrington! I point to these things with trunks branches and leaves on them and he says they are saplings!

I bet if you go to a satellite view of Accrington you would be able to see some trees. Saplings are young trees It Reminds me of little acorns growing into great Oak trees. We're off out tonight (quiz night). But I thought I would put some pics on of the inside of our new rental... And just to let you know that the evenings are getting a little cooler now. When it gets below 20c I have put a heater on in the lounge. Hope you all have a good evening. Regards. Trev..
