Hi All... I thought I would put on a little more information to go along with Ian's picture. As he says his picture shows the Mersey Mammoth moored against the North quay. This is mainly used by the 'Gas Base' or it's up to date name of 'Hydrocarbons'. This is where the supply boats moor up, and they are then unloaded with the things they have brought back from the 'Morecambe Bay Gas Field' . this can range from engineering things, to rubbish skips and mainly containers. Not usually the 20ft or 40ft that you see on wagons but slightly smaller ones. The supply boats are then loaded with similar things which they take out to the various rigs in the gas field. The firm that I worked for used to supply them with food. Both fresh and frozen, the frozen going into special containers. The blue crane on the dockside is the one used to load / unload these boats. And also to unload the large items that come on waggons. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ That's a very nice picture Ian. I bet you are pleased with it, especially with the crane up. I am glad that you have put it on the forum, but I am puzzled. Should you not be camping down there, overnight?? OK. I guess we all know the answer to that then.... Best wishes to all who have an interest in this thread, and are prepared to share what they can with us all. Trev..

Cheers Trev for the extra info, and as you said they answer is . As you said I just HAD to get her with the crane Up If the lift had been this afternoon then I would probably stayed over, but there is not much shelter around there, I had a visit from the boys in Blue but they were fine, they had come down to see the Mammoth but couldn't get a good view. I asked if it was to go through the gate and they said yes. Keith... as you stand by the LMS building looking out to see, there is a security fence to your left, The gate is in the fence sometimes it blows shut with the wind, you the walkover the intake to where you took your pics from. Whilst I was there Pennine security came in his van and asked if I had permission I said YES and he asked me from who my reply those two police men in that van that has just come around behind you ;D ;D ;D He wasn't happy. AIS is reporting the MM is steaming along, due east at its blistering pace of 4.5 knots. Is the job done then? Anyone on hand to catch it leaving? Perhaps someone should tell him, that Liverpool is the other way.
Looks like the AIS is sending out a weak signal and is being corrupted as the display keeps disappearing. I was hoping to get down there this morning but work got in the way.

Don't remember seeing that gate, it just looked like an area with no access.
Why do they choose to do the lift in the middle of the night? Is that when the port is non operational?

Don't remember seeing that gate, it just looked like an area with no access. Why do they choose to do the lift in the middle of the night? Is that when the port is non operational? Going from 2 years ago when I worked around Heysham Harbour, yes that time is quiet. At least quieter than 4-00 in the afternoon. But the port is supposed to be a 24 hr port. Hence the almost continual dredging. This goes on not only in the harbour but in the channel outside as well. The Ben My Chree leaves ABOUT 2-00 am and there was not a ship due then until about 5-30 am If they did the lift in the afternoon, when the Ben had left there was a ship onto number one ramp at about 3-30 pm. Regards. Trev..

Keith... If you look at those yellow signs as you go up the lane they are all numbered, the one for the gate is 46 if you go back to page 5 of this Message and scroll down until you find that pic of the Tug .
In the background you have two buildings one is the LMS and the other has a radio mast built onto it, stand by that wall and look at the fence and you should see the sign 46.
I have noticed on a couple of occasions that the gate sometimes blows shut with the wind but it wont lock as the padlock is locked to the fence.

Hi Trev, I'll have to watch out then Yep the Ben left at 2.15 and there were two more in the port on 2 and 3 ramps, when I got back I switched vhf on and both left around 4.30 almost in convoy, Port control asked the 'Tioga B' to get her divers out of the water first. I noticed when I was there that the 'Tioga B' was a naughty boy as he was NOT flying his flag to warn ships that he had divers down 'Clipper point' came in at 17.30, 'MM' has just had to move up the north Quay to give the 'Highland Pioneer' some room, sounds like that North quay is getting pretty full. It's even lower tides on Thursday Friday. www.pol.ac.uk/ntslf/tides/?port=0050Ian

I assume the Clipper Point would use number one ramp. The ships on 2 and 3 would be going to Dublin and Belfast I believe. As you probably know the Highland Pioneer is a gas base support vessel. Sometimes she is just in for an hour or so. But at other times for day or so, particularly on Thursday / Friday.
But it was said that they may go for a lift in the early morning if conditions allow.
I am surprised there seems to be nothing in the online papers.
Regards. Trev..

Yes Clipper Point usually uses number 1 number, 1 and 3 are Wider than number 2. one of the 'Tug' loader drivers said that they got the wider ramp to make it easier to unload and reload in a quicker time.
As regards the online news to be honest I think it would now be classed as old news and personally I don't think that they no what they are doing them selves.
'Arrow' just about to depart. 21.15
