Taking another look through the council web site, they are keeping documents updated, One interesting Discussion about Urban Splash in April: Councillor John Bates declared an interest in the discussions on the Urban Splash Development having previously submitted objections to the development through the Chamber of Trade and Commerce and the Winter Gardens.Evelyn Archer was also present yet did not declare an interest. Considering she is chair if the FOTWG, her name is on the WG deeds and she has used her council title and WG friends to very actively campaign against Urban Splash, quite incredible she did not retire from the discussion. www.morecambe.gov.uk/docs_publications/index.php?dir=Minutes and Agendas/Full Council/2010/Minutes&by=date&order=asc&by=date&order=asc

The link in the post above is broken and is a good example of why spaces should not be put into web addresses. www.morecambe.gov.uk/docs_publications/index.php?dir=Minutes%20and%20Agendas&by=date&order=ascThere was a lot of strong feeling at the meeting I attended last week about the Urban Splash proposal. As most of Morecambe Parish Council are involved with the Winter Gardens in some way, I wonder who will be left to make a decision. I don't really have a problem with some sort of development there but I would have to see some proper plans rather than a few pretty drawings. The one thing I do object to is the proposal to have an underground car park - are the planners completely barking bonkers - an underground car park on a flood plain - sheesh!

Never thought of that but cars can't swim - can they? Unless there is a Amphibious craft planned to take tourists to a ferry and then across the bay. Oh there I go again, thinking of ways to attract people to Morecambe.

I think the biggest problem with a ferry is the fact that for quite a lot of the time, the bay has no water in it. A hovercraft would be a better option but I doubt if it would be viable.

That`s an idea which has been presented on several occasions over the years, together with bridges to Barrow and hydro electric dams! Since I was a lad, people have twizzled on about building a marina, the Dome/Bubbles site would be great, dug out back to the old sea wall and using the Stone Jetty as one breakwater. Another breakwater would have to be built of course, and lock gates but it would be a wonderful use of the land. Not commercially viable of course but a happy pipe dream.

A bridge to Barrow would make it far too easy for the Cumbrians to come over here pillaging our women, no - let's keep it as it is.
Do you think a large entertainment venue would be a viable proposition in this area?

Do you think a large entertainment venue would be a viable proposition in this area? If you mean a concert hall, in a word, no. A multi use complex, just maybe. There simply aren't enough people in the catchment area compared with say Preston/Blackburn area. A medium sized venue could work, 600/700 capacity, we had one o them but it closed.

How far from being profitable was the Dome?

How far from being profitable was the Dome? I`ve no idea, I only once worked at The Dome but I think for a building which was solely an entertainment venue it was very underused.

On the subject of prom develpment plans has anybody any idea who is behind 'The Morecambe and Heysham Promenade Preservation Society' and what they actually hope to acheive?

I have no idea who TMHPS are but I would put them in the same league as the Luddites who saw change, any change as being bad. I strongly feel that any plans should be given a fair hearing and a decision reached using reasoned argument rather than be at the mercy of a few individuals who pop up, make a speech and then crawl back to whence they came. There were people at the steering group meeting who echoed those sentiments and I wouldn't be in the least bit surprised if they were involved with this organisation in some way.
Everyone is entitled to their views and these should be heard in full but for a small group to decide the outcome of something which affects the masses is not democracy.
I have been on the lookout for their website so I can read about what they propose for the regeneration of Morecambe but I have been unable to find it. If anyone finds the website, please let us know so that we may give their arguments come consideration.

We've no idea whether it's a group or individual, the Visitor article is based on an anonymous letter. I find it sad that newspapers choose to highlight the minority of negative comments. It took some effort to get my pro-Urban Splash facebook page a mention in the local rags.

Just read a bit about this in the online version of The Visitor. I seem to have missed the bit where part of Urban Splash's plans was for 22 beach houses. Do they mean residential homes or some sort of glorified beach hut for holiday makers? I really would like to see some more detailed information and perhaps a happy compromise could be reached if everyone knew what everyone else was on about, or indeed in some cases even who everyone else was and what (financial) interests they may or may not have in the area.
