Yes it is the flue which took the toxic fumes away up the hillside from the lead smelting mill. It is up on a barren hillside and the day I was there, the weather varied from sunshine, fog and then horizontal rain. More info here www.mylearning.org/jpage.asp?jpageid=544&journeyid=119I did a circular walk of about 7 miles and on the way up visibility was down to a hundred yards in the low cloud but on the way back down the valley became visible and Reeth could be seen. The ridge above Reeth is Fremington Edge, where we walked the previous day. The waterlogged path in front is our route but very few of the paths up here are marked this clearly. A map and a compass are essential up here as the weather can close in very quickly but the isolation is fantastic. Nearly 3 hours without seeing another human being, try doing that in Morecambe A close up of Reeth on the way back down from The Smelting Mill when the sun broke through the clouds and lit up the village green. This is a view of Reeth from Fremington Edge, on the other side of the valley, taken the previous day. It is a dangerous place to be, there are steep drops and the sheep are almost as big as the Village Green ;D
