It seems that some sites which once welcomed tourer caravaners and campers in tents now seem to be totally devoted to static caravans and chalets, presumably in the hope of having a permanently guaranteed clientelle of either the owners or by the owners subletting for the odd week and weekend. Although we've had a tourer caravan for years we have actually returned to the same site several times but had the freedom to go elsewhere as and when the fancy took us. For a few years we based our summers on a farm near Carnforth - then more recently at Ocean Edge, Heysham. Alas now the latter seems to have joined the ranks of 'statics only'. Where does this leave those who prefer to be a bit more mobile and not necessarily stay in the same location every holiday or for the whole of the summer? Thankfully it seems that Bolton Homes, although having a complete revamp, will still be catering for more tents and tourers than statics. It sounds like it's going to be rather nice with a new restaurant. and posh landscaping too.

There are still plenty of camping sites around to satisfy the metal box brigade. I have done plenty of camping under canvas but have never owned a caravan. My parents have had several tourers and statics but the fees went through the roof and they gave up their weekend gypsy life style, in favour of flats and cottages. They used to stay on some really nice remote farm sites with no mod cons but all but as they have got older they prefer a bit more luxury, like hot water and stuff like that. The owners of the bigger sites have been trying to take them up market with the statics and chalets. I don't think you have tasted the high life until you have stayed on a British Holidays Static Caravan Site and sampled the entertainment on offer:- All together now:- All the ladies in the harem of the court of King Karatakus, just passing by, All the ladies in the harem of the court of King Karatakus, just passing by, All the ladies in the harem of the court of King Karatakus, just passing by, All the ladies in the harem of the court of King Karatakus, just passing by, ................................... All fascinating witches who put the stitches in the breeches of the boys who put powder on the noses of the ladies of the harem of the court of King Kratacus AHHHHHH - such fond memories. Oh - and the bingo! The part we miss most though, are the hoards of screaming kids running round the club while their parents down their eleventeenth pint of Watney's Red Barrell I shouldn't complain though - it was cheap! I think we'll be sticking to farm cottages from now on.

I think Coachman and I have moved up into the world of B&Bs and country cottages now too but I've had some great summers camping with the kids. They've just sort of outgrown it now though.
I can relate to that wonderful entertainment you mention though Keith after a few years staying at Ocean Edge with:
"Bingo! Bingo! Get your dabbers out!" and the highly entertaining games such as pass the balloon.
Not forgetting the Birdy Song, Agadoo, Cha Cha Slide and Viva España!
