....to describing it. I am reliably informed that a new sign has been required by law be erected at Grange over Sands pointing across the Bay towards Hest Bank indicating a public byway! Isn't this just an open invitation to people to take their life in their hands as they attempt not to sink in the quicksands or be drowned by an incoming tide taking a short cut? Surely a sign like that is telling people it is a safe and legal road/path or what have you! IT ISN'T! No-one should even attempt to cross the bay without a qualified guide. Haven't we had enough deaths?

The council screwed up again and did you notice on the news that the R.N.L.I. land rover was shown on the beech, I think the lifeboat crew could be busy if that sign ain't changed Ian

I somehow can't see that being adequately effective. I've known people head off up Hardknott Pass when there are signs out warning them it is dangerous due to ice and snow.

There are signs at the Hest Bank side warning of the dangers. but who would want to walk through all those birds anyway. I find it marvellous that the bay can be crossed at all

There is an organised walk to Flookburgh from Hest Bank on the 31st. of May 2009. We would like to do that one because they don't do it very often, usually to Grange Over Sands.

Will you be taking a camera?

Yes, if we go, depends if Mrs Keef is up to it. Camera will only get damaged if it gets dropped into the water - solution - don't drop it in the water. The 3rd picture in the sequence above is our last crossing - the weather was fabulous. If you go take water, several big towels, a cagoule, a complete change of clothing (yes everything) wrapped up in a strong plastic bag ie. capable of being submerged. Wear shorts unless it happens to be minus 5 that day.
Do not take; Walking boots - Bare foot is best as salt water and shoes don't go well together.
I once suggested a sponsored streak in aid of something or other but was told not to be silly as there would be nowhere to put your stuff.

Bare feet? Supposing you step on something nasty!

The first time, I started off with trainers on but after taking them off for the first river crossing, I never put them back on until we reached the yukky black stuff at Grange Over Sands.

I've voted for the removal. Anyone seeing such a sign will be forgiven for assuming it is a safe pathway. There is absolutely no warning whatsoever that you could drown. Locals of course will be fully aware of the dangers but how many people come to the area who are not familiar with the danger and will see a signpost like that and just set off to walk across? If you saw a sign pointing through a field you wouldn't expect it to lead to a crumbling cliff edge would you? This is just as bad. I can't understand whatever possessed Cumbria County Council to put it up in the first place.
