Hi everybody! My name is Michelle, but you can call me Chelle if you like, it doesn't matter which you choose. Let me introduce you to myself in a little more depth so you know a bit more about me I am 19 years old and read law at Lancaster University. This means I live in the area whilst I am at Uni, by the canal in Lancaster in student accommodation called Chancellor's Wharf. I don't get too much chance to visit much of the surrounding area but recently visited Morecambe on Saturday for a job interview. Fingers crossed that I get the job. When I'm not at University I am at home which is around 50 miles away in Oswaldtwistle. I normally travel between them by train and bus as I don't drive, which can be a pain but I get by. My main pastimes are spending time with one of my best friends, Lucy, who enjoys going on days out with me to Blackpool, the Lakes and other lovely places and eating out. I also spend time socialising with my three other best friends Simon, Edwin and Jono though we tend to stay in Lancaster and sample some of the fine ales Lancaster has to offer. When I am by myself I like to study or go for long walks which tend to end up at KFC! I also enjoy taking photographs of my journeys, singing in the gospel choir and working with children and other students as a student ambassador at the University. Hopefully you'll find it a pleasure to talk to me as I normally have a lot to say and that isn't quite as fun if there is nobody there to talk back to me!

Hi Chelle, welcome to BayWeb! I love Lancaster too and often go there shopping when we are up in the Morecambe/Heysham area in the school summer holidays. We used to spend all summer camping on a farm in the Carnforth area but we've 'graduated' to Ocean Edge in our tourer caravan now and most of the time it's just me and youngest daughter as the others are busy working. Hope you were successful with the job interview. We might see you there next time we visit.

Well fingers crossed but in all honesty the catering industry isn't really my strongest point and there are probably people out there who are a lot better than me at the job! I just hope my cheery personality won him over!

One thing I noticed on Saturday was that nobody seemed to smile in Morecambe...

Hi Chellie. Maybe they dont smile in Morecame cos the local council have taken out all the fun in Morecambe. A few years ago it was a great town where celbs would come to. There was a punk festival where Morecambe market is. It was built to hold the market but 3 weeks of the year the stalls had to close so the punk festival could be held. The stall holders complained so the punk festival was stopped till the council were reminded that the Lottery people had paid for it so when Morecambe wanted to hold a large festival they could. After a year of wrangling the people who organised the punk festival decided enough was enough and moved to Blackpool. Also, one year Noel Edmunds turned the illuminations on. It was then decided to open a Mr. Blooby Land at Happy Mount Park. All was going swimmingly until the council renaged on some promise (or promises) and Noel decided that was that. He had to take the council to court where he won 2 million quid. Serves Morecambe council right. Theyve also stopped the illuminations because of the cost. But it brought people into Morecambe. Now you know why the people in Morecambe arent smiling. Theres nought there for them now. Anything the council have anything to do with, it goes wrong. Would you smile? Try looking round Carnforth, Warton, Silverdale and you'll seesmiling people.

If you go back a little bit - there used to be the Light and Water festival with 2 days of open air concerts in that area next to the Dome. I used to love that. Mind you this last weekend at least there was that Bradford to Morecambe car thingy and the Battle of Britain flypast, and the fireworks on Saturday evening.
Go back a little further though and some of us oldies can remember when Morecambe had 2 piers, and 2 professional and at least one amateur theatre, and 2 pleasure beaches, and a pirate ship! They all seem to disappear/be destroyed around the same time (fires? arson?) How about the HUGE open air swimming pool where beauty pageants were held? Or the dolphinarium, Marineland, on the Stone Jetty? At one time it almost had a tower too to rival the one in Blackpool. I hasten to add that was before my time.)
It's almost unbelievable now to recall just how much there was going on in Morecambe way back when.
It is so sad to see the area of derelict ground where Frontierland used to be ......... and I have fond memories of the bigger fairground on the land which now hosts the Sunday market. There was a carousel with galloping horses.
At least the Midland has finally been done up and is open for business.
I shall have to tell myself off in a minute for waffling in an intro thread and not posting this in the general chat area. ;D

I just hope something is done to bring some spark back into the place. I had such a lovely time by myself wading in the sea but I did get some funny looks! I'm just glad the beach is clean so it can still be enjoyed. Just a shame about the lack of attractions.

I think the council is hoping to attract more visitors and regenerate the whole area now the Midland has been restored. Perhaps they should aquire a panopticon.

Its great that The Midland has been done up back to how it was. Now Morecambe needs to get the Winter Gardens going again. I remember at least one of the peirs Rosie. It was arson that got at least one of them. Also the pirate ship Moby Dick. The pool at the far end of Morecambe really need re doing also. UrbanSplash who did The Midland want to build some housing on the prom From what I hear, it is attrocious (the plans). We dont need that thankyou. I hope that falls through.
