Does anyone know the history of the Rocks used for Morecambes sea defenses? I was told several years back that they came from Wales and also that the Welsh wanted them back. Is there any truth in this?

No doubt someone will know the definitive answer. But there is no way I can see them bringing rocks that far. My educated guess is that they will be from the quarries around Carnforth.

This article says that the Limestone rocks came from quarries in the Carnforth area. lancsscm.web-labs.co.uk/Documents/Morecambe%20Coastal%20Work.pdfI know of several limestone quarries near Horton in Ribblesdale, from a previous life but not in the Carnforth area. What do the quarries in Over Kellet produce? As for the Welsh - If they are from Wales and they want them back, tell them that we will float them back to them. That should shut them up. If there are any Welsh readers on here - I say Llanfairpwlgwngyllgogerychwyrndrobwylyantysiliogogogoch Doddy Back, Nos dah! AccyKeef - News at Ten - Stone Jetty

So the Welsh have no claim on them thank goodness. Can't see the council wanting to fish them out from under all the litter which has accumulated between them.

In a similar vein though the round stones on the Stone Jetty caused a bit of a kerfuffle when they were brought here. I believe they came from a beach in Devon or Cornwall and shouldn't have been moved.

When they did the Battery car park and sea defenses, every now and then a chap would turn up with what I can only describe as a Sargent Majors pacing stick. And he would walk up and down and drop the stick between the stones odd I thought So I asked him what he was doing! His reply was " I am looking for gaps that children could get into, and if his stick feel in then so could a child" I went back the next day and a new stone had been placed to fill the gap.. Daft thing is you still see kids crawling inside them so it's not done much good, I only hope they don't get caught out by the tide..

How often do you see kids walking on the rocks while parents hold their hands. I think the rocks look better than the anti tank blocks you see in other coastal defences and anything is better than allowing the sea to erode the coastline. Without the rocks, we could have a beach house in a few years time.

One item that worried me as I daily went along the prom was the almost continuous wave wall/barrier. I know that a lot of it is many years old now, but especially when it is damp you can see a multitude of cracks. I wondered if these were caused by the reinforcing rods inside, rusting and expanding. But that would have been thought of at the design stage... wouldn't it?? Regards. Trev..

Who would have thought that a combination of salt water and steel would produce rust. I would have thought that a plastic alternative would have been found by now.
