Isn't technology marvellous. The tech is good, the problem lies with the thicko academic types who control it. These companies have spent billions of beer tokens on research and development yet without a thin piece of plastic, none of it will function. They can turn an individual box on and off remotely so why do you need a card? You either have a valid account or you don't. If you had a problem, you ring them and they could switch it back on again at their end, no problem with cards being cloned etc. We have a Sky box but it has been in the loft for over 3 years, unloved, gathering dust and not causing us any stress at all.

You either have a valid account or you don't. .......... a friend tells me .................It may not always be that simple. Maybe someone has a valid account, but the equipment is being used in a non valid location ? I would be careful phoning them from outside UK. Peter

I phoned Sky last month to switch us over to our new address in Morecambe, they wanted a fortune for the set up so I told them to Stuff it and have gone with BT instead. But a friend has told me that I should have closed my account with them and to get Mrs Musky to open a new account (with one of the reps you see in the Arndale) and we would get brand new Sky+ Box and £30 fitting and discount viewing for the first 6 months. To tell you the truth I don't like Sky as a company it's very annoying when like Trev says when you phone them up the staff push your patience to the limit. I have had many an argument with them.

Well all your individual comments are definitely correct. I am not racist, but in common with many other people, I do have difficulty dealing with foreign call centres.
It is correct that receiving SKY in Cyprus is not legal. I truly think that SKY are not bothered unless you say you are in Cyprus, or other foreign countries.
I do use my mobile phone, and when they ask my full telephone number I quote an 01524 code.
I will let you all know what happens on Monday after I speak to Ireland.

My understanding is that it is legal for us - oops I mean my friends - who live abroad to receive the transmission but SKY can not sell us a subscription.
This is a question of broadcast rights for films, sporting events, etc.
I'm not sure how this applies to freeview, etc received by satellite.
I've watched BBC, ITV etc on SKY in Limasol hotels, so it doesn't seem to be rigorously enforced !

Hi Peter, and All. You are correct that it is not enforced at all for private viewing. Sky would certainly lose a lot of revenue if they turned off all the cards that are being used in countries outside of the British isles. Well here is my update after yesterdays 'India' call. I phoned this morning and spoke to a very nice Guy. I asked him if he could turn the old Blue card back on at least until the card sent by SKY last Friday had a chance to be delivered to me. He politely told me that he could not do that. Due to the fact that we have had three cards sent to the UK address now I asked him if there was any chance at all that there was more than one address on the computer for me...... He had a look and said... YES there is. There is the new (billing) address and the old address is still there and it is where the cards have all been sent to. He apologised profusely and put me on hold for over 10 minutes whilst he went to sort it out with his supervisor. When he came back on he told me that he had wiped the old address from the system. However he told me that he could not send (another) new card until 5 days from the last one, the system would not allow it. So he promised a new card on Wednesday and he will send it to our new address. He also said that as it was SKY's fault he will send it by Courier and that it should arrive on Thursday. His next sentence may prove a little problematic. He said he will ring on Wednesday to say he has sent the card... and that someone needs to be there on Thursday to sign for it off the courier. I asked what happens if there is no one in and he said they will sometimes leave it at the local PO. or leave a phone number. It's a lot of trouble but hopefully it will be worthwhile. Cheers. Trev

Well at least it sounds like some progres is being made and they have admitted that it's their mistake. Makes a nice change.
We watched Sky when we were in France this summer. Quite a lot of people have it in the area where we were.

Hi all. I have just been in touch with my daughter in the UK, to ask if SKY have rung or sent a white card by courier as promised ?
Guess what..... No phone call and no card delivered yet. If there is nothing by weekend then I will be ringing them again next week . More Euros out of my pocket.

Not everyone sees the need for SKY. I know some have the free-view set top boxes.

Well we have just had good news from my Daughter in the UK. The long awaited (forth) sky card has arrived at her address and she has immediately posted it off to us.
So later next week we will keep a lookout for the postman with a little padded envelope to sign for.
Cheers. Trev..
