My brother in his youth raced historic racing cars & still maintains an interest by chatting to other enthusiasts, one of these mentioned to him (knowing that he was a regular visitor to the Morecambe Bay area) a story that there was an Alta racing car that came to grief on the sands during the 1930's or 40's.Was it a speed trial or test? Was it the quicksand that got it?Anybody know anything about this event to stop them speculating?

I certainly have never heard of anything like this on Morecambe sands. There has never been a long enough level stretch for car trials, as far as I know.

Ah could be couldn't it, that was Babs at Pendine Sands in Wales wasn't it? But maybe one stretch of sand is much like another to some people ! Take the point about the stretch of sand not being long enough but maybe that was the problem! Oooh I've heard about the plane as well, but was told it was Coco Chanel in the '30s & it seems she stayed at the Midland Hotel quite often,is that right?

But you need less length for a plane than for a car speed trial. Trev..

The book, 'The Ebb and Flow of Morecambe' mentions that someone fell out of one of those planes.

They did indeed in 1925, Here is a picture from the book you mention. At the inquest the pilot was found not to be to blame in any way. Trev..

Ha ha, I doubt it. But you would wonder how someone could 'accidentally ' fall out of a lane on a pleasure trip.
