Merry Xmas from Pompey. I've managed to bag 4 nights Half-Board at The Strathmore between 21-25 January for £99 each. Included in that is return coach travel from Pompey, a day in the Lakes including a trip on Lake Windermere (brrr!), half day to Lancaster and Barton Grange, and 4 drinks vouchers per person per day. Can't stay at home for that. I stay in the travelodge for £32 per night for a double room with breakfast at Wetherspoons - bacon roll with coffee £1.99 - not as good as the Strathmore but a saving. I eat at Snatchems, Broadway, Palatine and Wetherspoons ...

My Mum is 80 so as you can imagine she babbles quite a bit. Actually that is not quite true as she babbles (and finishes sentences) a lot better than Mrs Keef My Grandad (on my Mum's side) was the one with a great association with Morecambe. He stayed here, for a week, every summer and walked from the West End to Heysham every morning before breakfast. I think that is where I get my liking for walking from. TRH is hyper at the moment and I am sure that tomorrow will be the traditional very early start. I have told her that Christmas does not start until it comes light but her idea of light is far different from ours. Stay tuned to this channel for the next exciting installment of Christmas at Keefy Towers. Once you have turned it off you will strugggle to find any enthusiasm to turn it back on again.

Ha ha I enjoyed reading this Keith. I will probably regret this but who is TRH.
Your Grandad certainly seemed to like his walking, at least it was all on level ground
Starting the day before full light shows dedication. I think my dedication has got up and left me now.
I will tune in later to see if there are any tales from Keefy Towers.
Again, if there are others reading this, then share your thoughts with us and tap out a few words on the keyboard.
Cheers. Trev..

TRH is The Reluctant Hiker, star of regular bug hunts.
It was indeed still dark (0615) when were awoken from out slumbers by a cheery 'Good Morning' followed by 'Presents' . We gave her 2 options:- Go back to bed
or
Get dressed and wlak with me to the Stone Jetty, she chose option number 1. It is brew and tablets time at the moment but I fear mayhem will soon take over Keefy Towers.

Ah yes, I remember the reluctant Hiker now. She probably chose wisely. I am not sure that I would fancy a wlak even on the Stone Jetty. It certainly sounds very painful. We don't do presents, but I got a few for Mrs Trev and it made her cry. You can't win can you. It is a lovely sunny day here and we are having the Christmas meal at around 4pm this afternoon. It seems a strange time to me but I realise it is to suit Hilary's Dad who always has teatime at between 4 and 5 pm. I have decided to mix up a load of weed killer and go out spraying the weeds which have grown abundantly in the recent wet weather. I will look in later. Trev..

Presents opened, no wlaking has been done to protect the environment. Making dinner now so I may be some time.

Re " So I may be some time " Those were the last words of Captain Lawrence Oates of the Antarctic exploration.
I hope you come back with more exciting tales. I enjoy them.
I have been out this morning, and you won't believe what I have been doing on Christmas day. Because it is the first really good sunny day for a while, I have been spraying the weeds with (not unnaturally) weedkiller.

The idea of spraying weed killer on a Chritmas Day has to be some sort of Cypriot tradition which you have latched on to.
Cooking since mid morning felt like an Artic expedition but finally my work is done, at least most of the cooking is done. We are having a break before serving some sickly sweets, to round off a gut stuffing meal. We have still got plenty of food left but none of us can face it, at the moment. There is of course the exception, Mr Kleen, who continues to munch his way through anything edible which is presented to him.

I am not sure about the weed killer being a Christmas day tradition. It just needed doing and the time seemed appropriate. We have had all 2 courses of Christmas Dinner, and like you, we have mountains left over for Turkey soup, Turkey sandwiches and turkey this that and the other. We had another ' happening' today. In the middle of the afternoon whilst relaxing, we saw a little dog go past the patio door. We went out to see why it was there and it led us to a bigger dog that was collapsed on our Patio. The big dog did look at deaths door. There were traces of blood on the tiles and the dog seemingly could not use his back legs. He was in great distress and salivating a lot. It looked s though he had been knocked down by a car, but we are 500mts from the nearest roadway. I quickly drove to all the nearby houses but everyone was out, for dinner I suppose. So I rang the animal charity in Paphos and asked if they could collect an injured dog. They said they did not collect but would treat it if I brought it in. So that's what I did, We lifted into the back of the 4x4 and I drove the 20km to the animal sanctuary. When I left they had put a needle in his leg presumably to put him on a drip. I took a photo of the dog so I will try again tomorrow to find the owner. It's been an eventful day. Cheers. Trev..

Just an update on the dog. The animal clinic phoned me a little while ago to say that the dog had been poisoned. It is something that happens here, people lay poison down on purpose. I don't really know why....
The clinic said that the dog should be OK by the end of tomorrow and that it was good that I got there quickly. Apparently he is a healthy dog with no ticks or fleas so it would appear that he is well looked after.
I will try tomorrow to find the owner.

Nice to see you are a good Samaritan Trev although why they poison dogs is a mystery unless they are a real threat for some reason. That dog doesn't look neglected so it might bring you some Brownie points from a grateful neighbour. All is cal here now and sickly sweet thing is a distant memory now. It was a bit yummy even though I say so myself. Malteser biscuit and Baileys Parfait.

Mmmmmm. That looks really Yummy. But I bet you showed self restraint and left half for another day ;D
I'm pretty full up at the moment, and trying with little success not to keep dipping into the chocolates.
I will post tomorrow how I get on re the dog and the owner. He may be annoyed, as to collect the dog will probably incur some hefty vets fees.
We shall see. Trev..

Here is this mornings update on the Poisoned dog. I went around the village calling at coffee shops and one of the local shops. No one knew for sure where the dog lived or who the owner was.
The nearest I got to accurate information was from the postman. When I told him where I thought the dog lived he said that was the place of a Shepherd.
So I called at these premises again and there was a car outside, I shouted, and a man came out who fortunately spoke good English. I told him the story and showed him the picture, and YES it was his dog.
All I could do was pass over the picture of the dog to him with the telephone numbers of the animal sanctuary where he was at.
I do hope that he claims him but at the back of my mind I cannot but wonder what the cost will be when, or if he goes to collect the dog.
One part of my mind thinks that the owner should have to pay for the treatment to save his dog, and I think the cost may be quite a bit. The other side of my mind thinks that if no one claimed the dog and he had to be euthanased then the Animal charity would receive no recompense for their work.
I don't know the answer, I just hope the dog is not left there.

I have decided to mix up a load of weed killer and go out spraying the weeds which have grown abundantly in the recent wet weather. The dumpiest, most horrid weed in Cyprus is called Demetris Christofias. Good chance it could be eradicated soon though.

I stay in the travelodge for £32 per night for a double room with breakfast at Wetherspoons - bacon roll with coffee £1.99 - not as good as the Strathmore but a saving. We wanted to stay at the one on Euston Road in September, but for the dates we wanted it was £49 a night. The new(ish) one in Lancaster [on the old Odeon site] was only £19 a night, so we stayed there. And it's right next door to Wetherspoons (Sir Richard Owen) too. Very comfortable room.
