We had a leaflet dropped through our door, earlier this week, announcing that the Council were giving away free compost. Thursday morning, Sainsbury's cark par, from 8am.
Mrs Keef sent me out at the alotted time armed with some bags and I got to Sainsburys and waited, and waited and waited some more. There were 2 Council workers there setting up what looked like a mini car boot sale but there were no signs of any rotting vegitation at all, apart from some of the other people waiting. The Council workers did not know how long it would be and were not too concerned as they enjoyed relaxing in the early morning sunshine.
By 0830, I decided that I had done enough waiting and headed back home compostless.
The issue raises a few questions:-
The compost had not arrived when I left and there may be a very good reason for the no-show.
Why are the Council giving compost away in the first place?
There is the cost of producing and delivering the leaflets, staffing the site and transporting the compost.
In these times of cuts and shortages of wonga, would it not have been better to sell it and make a bit of money back?
Better still, I am sure they have a lot of compost so sell it to one of the big suppliers.
Councils all over the country seem not to have even the slightest sense of business and commerce. Where a private company will look for ways to boost profit, the Council/Government mind set is to close something to save money.
I bet I could save the Council thousands and not make 1 single person redundant. That may not be entirely true, I am sure I could shave a few expensive ne'er do wells off the top of the Council food chain and not affect services in the slightest.
I just hate wasting time and that is just what I did this morning.
Rant over - time to get some real work done now.
