Every year, sometime between Christmas and New Year, we try to relive our 'first date' when Coachman took me and the two girls on a trip up to Kirkstone Pass where we had a hot chocolate in the Kirkstone Inn. One year we didn't make it because the weather was so bad and the snow so deep it wasn't possible to get up there. Thought we might not manage it this year too because of Coachman having had his op. However, he said he was feeling fine and so yesterday we braved the weather and off we went.
It was a bit overcast but fine as we left home and a bit of blue sky even began to appear as we travelled up the motorway. Can't say it ever actually became warm and sunny though.
On arriving at Kirkstone Inn it was a bit chilly but fine - the lights had all gone out in the Inn though but the candlelight was very 'Christmassy' - then when we came to order I realised I'd left my purse in the car and Coachman only had his credit card on him so I headed back to the car to get my purse.
It was flippin FREEZING outside! Hail, sleet, icy wind blowing....... and of course we were right at the far end of the car park! By the time I got back to the pub I was soaked and frozen half to death.
We had our hot choccies and Coachman said he would go and bring the car closer - when he went out there the sun was shining and not a sign of rain or sleet! I must have led a wicked life or something. ;D
We rounded off the day in Morecambe with a meal at the Honey Tree.

A few years ago, I did something similar around Xmas. I took my French parents-in-law up to Kirkstone Pass. Satellite view : g.co/maps/dzucwThe fog came down and we couldn't see too much but we staggered on. We parked in the fog opposite the inn then spent a few hours sampling English delicacies. The weather cleared and we continued home. I've done similar Lakes trips in winter quite often since 1973. It is certainly better without the summer tourist hordes !

Good to hear Coachman is back in his role of chauffeur. We went past there a few weeks before Christmas on a trip up to Penrith, it brought back some happy memories of cycling over there in pouring rain, many years ago.
We stopped at the Inn this time, but only to look down on the camp site which cannot be seen now because of the trees. We then followed Captain Slow, driving the world's widest Micra, along the banks of Ullswater and we reached a dizzy 30mph at one point.

He was probably enjoying the scenery Keef. ;D It is lovely up there. As we drove along that road I kept getting himself to stop so I could take photographs. Daughter got a new camera for Christmas and her photos are loads better than mine now. I'm trying hard not to be jealous.
