Did anyone else go to a council viewing site to watch this year's Lancaster Castle Firework display? I went to Salt Ayr and being very honest, if the format or even the venue isn't changed next year then I'll be snuggling down at home with a nice bottle of wine instead.
The staff managed to tune into The Bay about 6pm, very loud and very clear. At 7pm they re-tuned to Radio Lancs and immediately the music volume went down, although the commentators could be heard clearly. And that's how it stayed right through the display. Obviously with so many people tuned in, they took the opportunity to remind us what we were listening to. And they kept on reminding us, even doing a live interview while they were broadcasting the music.
And so it was that I hardly heard a single note of the accompanying music. Volume way too low and a ridiculous amount of commentary.
Then there's the venue. Why the castle? They've moved the viewing areas away due to health and safety so no one can watch anywhere near the castle. Why not move it to Morecambe? Perfect launch pad (the stone jetty), perfect viewing area (promenade with "safety barriers" permanently in place), perfect backdrop (the bay) and with a ready made area for a few funfair rides.

Excellent idea Brian - with the refelections of the fireworks on the bay they could call it a 'Light and Water Festival' They could even try what Blackpool did by inviting competition from different Firework chaps and making a week of it. Now that could be an attraction bringing visitors to the area.

I remember one of the early L&W's when they had some decent music, lively stuff, and none of the same-old classical stuff (which from memory seems to have been the same music for the last 3 years).
I went to all the L&W festivals, music during the day and through the evening to the display. The fountains in the first year were brilliant and setting off the fireworks from the bay were another good year. You could argue that a bay isn't the best place on a wet November night, neither is a boggy park and at least Morecambe's viewing areas are all hard ground (drat, i forgot to put that in my feedback to LCC).
Doubt we'd get a firework competition unless we invent a new one but why not invent a new one? Blackpool stole theirs from Southport.
