Someone has sent me this old photo of Central Promenade in Morecambe with the clock tower again as a prominent feature. I'm curious about the raised area to the side where the toilets and the donut cafe now are. Does anyone know what this was? It's also odd that the clock tower seems to be on the same level as the road whereas now it's slightly lower isn't it?

The ground does indeed seem to slope down towards the clock tower now. It would be interesting to compare a recent photograph taken in the same location.

There used to be some underground toilets under the gardens, next to Cllr. Birkett's clock tower. I read about this somewhere, I think it was in a book called 'The Ebb and Flow of Morecambe'. From memory, the toilets were filled in and the gardens remained in place for a time until the present toilet block was built. This looks like it was taken after the toilets were filled in.
As for taking a picture, this could be a job for the Morecambe Bayweb lamp post climbing division. I am down there tomorrow, I will have a look to see which building it was taken from. It may be the pub which used to be Pascha.

Is that the Queen's Hotel you're referring to Keith? Many years ago when I worked in a bank in Clayton-le-Moors (which no longer exists, the bank I mean not Clayton-le-Moors!) a couple of our customers moved to Morecambe to run the Queens.

I have printed the photo out and will be pretending to be a tourist tomorrow trying to find the exact spot from which it was taken. I think it might be the Queens but we do not pub crawl in Morecambe (or anywhere for that matter) so not too sure. A friend of mine used to be the DJ at Pascha, before I moved up here. I think that is the right location but a bit of on the spot work should sort it out. I was thinking about what could be added to this site which would be of interest to world wide visitors and locals alike. I thought that if we could get a collection of old photos together, I could go out and take the same photo but how it looks now. There have been many changes during the 5 years I have been here so photos taken in the early 1900's could be very interesting. we might even be able to get the council interested but judging from the council's record so far - stupid idea!!!!!!! We could even start a debate about the M6 link road - now there is a debate with some feeling.

Willow Would that be the bank next to the motorway which became Champs? No. that would be the other bank which outlived it for a while and was situated down by the canal bridge next to the Con club.

If you look on the Francis Frith web site you will see 4 pictures with the clock tower in them. . Picture #8 shows that same built up area with the steps up to it. It looks like there are seats on it.

The groung has certainly been raised around the clock tower since that picture was take. If you look at more modern pictures the stonework at the bottom is now covered. There are 56 pictures including the one at the start of this thread, here.......... www.flickr.com/search/?q=morecambe%20clock%20tower&w=allRegards. Trev..

Now that's interesting because it certainly does look like the ground has been raised around the bottom of the clock tower to cover those bottom stones but that would male it higher than the surrounding area but the bit to the side where new loos are and the donut place has a little grass bank down from the road and a few concrete steps so that would make the road itself higher.

I am poised, with my theodolite waiting for daylight and the solution to this mystery. it's a pity that there are no reference points on the road. I will try and work out the layout without drawing too much attention to myself.

The ground around the base of the clock tower is currently on the same level as the road and the prom. There is a level grassed area between the clock tower and the road. I think you may be confusing this with the grass in front of the public conveniences which is indeed a slight incline and yet the car park at the other side of the loos is perfectly level with the road.

;D This is getting quite fun now isn't it? I've got visions of you climbing up a lamppost to get the right angle for a photograph!
