Some of the readers may remember me from earlier last year when I staged a sell out show in the Dome about the heritage of Morecambe. It was so successful that they shut down the Dome straight afterwards so that I couldn't do another one! If anyone is interested in the history of Morecambe they might like to know that several of the films that I showed have now had the copyright cleared and are now available on the two and a quarter hour double dvd called "Morecambe Bay Our Heritage Part 1. Also, if you dial up vimeo.com/chrisabram you will find short clips from that and several other "Our Heritage" dvd's. There is also a new website open, being completed in March, called www.heritagevideo productions.co.uk which is devoted to the heritage of Britain. Kind regards Chris Abram

Things have been updated in my life of trying to bring Morecambe's, and surrounding, heritage to the attention of locals. Some of you have seen Morecambe Bay Our Heritage Part 1 well there is now a Part 2 and a Part 3. There won't be any more in the near future as I will explain later. Recently I launched another dvd called "Hidden Lancaster" in the Lancaster Brewery. That is proving to be of big interest and is stocked in Carnforth Bookshop, Morecambe Visitor Centre and Lancaster Visitor Centre. If these are of interest then I would suggest a visit to my website www.heritagevideoproductions.co.uk would prove beneficial. This summer I have been shadowing Cedric Robinson MBE, the Queen's Guide to the Kent Sands, and will be staging a Gala Tribute in his honour in the Coronation Hall, Ulverston on Friday 11th October at 7.30 pm. Playing live will be Paul Hayes and his Collection, Morecambe Brass Band and The Houghton Weavers. I have already received video contributions from Lord Bragg, Ken Dodd, "Hayley" from Coronation Street (Julie Hesmondhalgh), BBC's Dave Guest and Broadcaster Eric Robson. It will be a chance to pay homage to the legendary Cedric Robinson by the public and personalities. "The legendary Cedric Robinson MBE" dvd will be available by the 11th October. Advance orders using Paypal can be made vis www.heritagevideoproductions.co.ukI wanted to do this in Morecambe but unfortunately, due to our short sighted parish council, there is no suitable venue left standing. On the 16 November in The Platform, I will be staging another "Times Past" programme featuring a lot of "new" old films of Morecambe. Hopefully as part of the show I will also present "Professor William's Magic Lantern Show" I have been entrusted with thousands of negatives, glass negatives and magic lantern slides of old Morecambe views and postcards going back to Victorian times, These were the property of the the late Morecambe photographer Bill Houston from Bare. THIS WILL BE THE LAST TIME THAT I WILL EVER DO A SHOW IN MORECAMBE DUE TO THE MYOPIC, NEAR SITED, HEAD UP THEIR BACKSIDE, MORECAMBE PARISH COUNCIL. I have spent years and many thousands of pounds publicizing this area without receiving anything from this council. I and Bill's family decided that this vast collection of material should be preserved and restored and made available to the public. To do this many of the 8"x6" glass negatives need to be professionally scanned, something I cannot do on my domestic scanner. I went to the Grants committee of MTC and explained how I intended to give up two or three years of my time to this task. Lots of arguments but eventually, by a single majority they agreed to give me a grant of £500 towards the cost of this professional scanner. Then at the following main council meeting they decided that I wasn't eligible. Result : I will NEVER DO ANYTHING FOR MORECAMBE AGAIN. This council are the main reason why Morecambe is going backwards and will never become a major seaside resort again. They are small minded and cannot see into the future. many other British resorts are forging ahead with new investment and attractions and what do we have, nothing but a promenade view. It has taken them years to try and produce a forward looking strategic plan, and we are still waiting, and has rejected major investment schemes such as The Beachcomber Marina project and Urban Splash's ideas. I wanted to preserve an essential part of Morecambe's heritage for future generations as I work very closely with the North West Film Archive. Others were prepared, as myself, to work voluntarily to ensure that our future children would be able to enjoy this priceless collection.... but now they never will, thanks to pathetic Morecambe Town Council

Hello Chris. Many thanks for your enlightening post, it is just sad that is contains so many negative (no pun) views. These of course are unavoidable, given the difficulties that have been placed in your way.
Our family are sad to hear the news about Bill Houston. As we lived in Bare we knew Bill well.
Thanks. Trev..

Sorry to hear of your decision Chris but I can't say I blame you one bit. Unfortunately it is not just Morecambe which suffers from short sighted leaders. It seems to be a requirement these days for Councillors to have no business nouse whatsoever and they seem to rely on closing things to balance the books.
Anyone who raises their head above the parapet and suggest an investment idea is shouted down and shuts up out of frustration.
I got involved with a Council initiative a few years back which was supposed to discuss ways of improving the area, although I suspect the main agenda was to promote how wonderful certain councillors were. The outcome from that was a crap website written by somebody down South (as a web designer, you can imagine how that grated on me).
Very little else in the way of substance came out of the whole endeavour and the whole exercise just fizzled into nothing. I assume the Council is still going although we don't hear anything from them, must not be election time.
Something like a film archive could be a money making venture as part of the Council's website but that would take organisation by someone with imagination so is unlikely to happen.

I think I remember what you are referring to. A council website was started, where the general population could have a little input. But it stalled, stuttered and stopped and no more seems to be heard of it.

The website has been up and running for quite a while but the have your say section has a contribution from some geyser in Montpelier, shows the kind of standards they adhere to.
I would expect to find all kinds of things about Morecambe, pictures, history etc. but apart from the what's on diary, there nowt much on there.

I didn't see a sign up to our political propaganda ego boost newsletter option anywhere. They don't even do politics very effectively but who am I to criticise?

You are probably more than this, but you are a resident voter that want's to express your concern at the running of the town.
