Hi Willow. Yes it is the white building, and yes they are a pair of semis. If you look closely you can see that they are set at a slight angle to the promenade. They are in line with the original line of the front of the plot of land, shown on the last mapRegards. Trev..

Hi Keith. I am not sure that I can answer your questions. We think that the building that is now the 'Parks' was a children's holiday home, And it is likely that the other smaller building was part of the same set up. This is an aerial picture from the 1960s Trev.. EDIT.. Yes it was called the 'Craig Children's Home' and was at one time owned by Mr Walls. He was the gentleman that owned Morecambe rock shop , and was credited with being the first to make rock with lettering all the way through.

Going back to that 1919 map it looks like there's a lot of stuff between the Elms and the sea, but when you analyse it there's also a lot of nothing and if you look at field 242, looking from The Elms between that clump of trees and Morecambe Bay Villas there does seem to be an open vista to the sea. I'm also curious now about 'Lakeland' and like you Keith I've been wondering about that building in the corner of The Parks which seem to be two seperate smaller buildings on the old map which have since been extendeed and joined into one.
Whilst we're on the subject of history, what can anyone tell me about Bare Hall?

EDIT.. Yes it was called the 'Craig Children's Home' and was at one time owned by Mr Walls. He was the gentleman that owned Morecambe rock shop , and was credited with being the first to make rock with lettering all the way through. It was a holiday home for deprived children in Leeds / Bradford. In the 1960's it was managed by the Brooks family (Joyce, Harry & Philip) - well known in Morecambe for their dedication to scouting. Also interesting in the 60's photo is : Bare Pool - I think this has now gone ? Empty plot / car park at the bottom of Princes Crescent. I guess it was empty for 20 years until the flats were built. What was there before ? The trees at the back of the white house are the edge of the orchard of the house I grew up in. Easy to spot as the semis close to Lansdowne Grove but accessed by the long drive to Elms Rd. In good years we used to sell (probably give ?) the fruit to Ainsworths fruit and veg shop on Princes Crescent and they used to come and pick it. I can also remember my father and Harry Brooks (see above) pressing apples through an old washing mangle to make cider. Today, there are fewer trees and the greenhouse and garden shed have gone. My grandfather and father built the garden paths. I learned to drive aged 11 on the driveway - you could get an Austin A35 into third by the time you had to brake very hard to avoid hitting the house. Then I had to clean the drive with Ajax to remove the skid mark evidence before my parents came home. Peter

What a brilliant driveway. I would love something like that. Does that dotted line outline the property boundary?

Yes .......... I guess the plots were sold as infill after the other houses on Elms Rd. Looking at it again, the house "A" was built new in the 60's. Is it possible that the "A" land plus ours was all owned by the white house at one time ? As our house was 30's, it is possible that our house owned the land and split it up to provide the house "A" plot. Adding the 3 plots together gives a more sensible shape ? And following the alignment of the white houses would take the border to "The Cove". I have a long drive today, too. The garage is 80m from the gate, so when I arrive by car, I race the dog to the garage. He is thin, I am not. Peter Peter

Hi Peter.
Yes the old paddling pool that you would have known has gone now. You will no doubt be able to see on Bing maps, or G E the new more rounded one. This seems to be used for model boat enthusiasts now as well as paddling.
I think there is still a fruit / veg / flower shop call Robinsons, on the crescent. Though I have no idea if it is still in the family.
The spare land at the bottom of Princes crescent before the flats were built was always just spare land as far as I know.
And to answer Willow's question about the word 'Lakeland' that appears on old maps. This is where the present day names show through the map layers, and it refers to the name for the big block of flats. 'Lakeland House'.
Cheers. Trev..

Somebody thought that the picture I have attached to this message might have been taken at The Elms hotel in the 1920s. I wondered whether you or anyone else reading this might have a view as to whether that might be correct. (I know there is not much to go on!!) Attachments:

It is difficult to know from the photo. Maybe a coincidence, but the text refers to "Sporting Cars Limited". This was the name of the garage on Lansdowne Road. In the 1960's it was owned by the same people as Mayfield garage. It seems to have fallen on hard times, but the two grages were Standard Triumph and BMC main dealers in the 1960's : maps.google.com/maps?q=morecambe&ie=UTF8&hl=en&hq=&hnear=Morecambe,+United+Kingdom&ll=54.078859,-2.838437&spn=0,0.004128&z=19&layer=c&cbll=54.078792,-2.838314&panoid=flvJa1brGSQh5hxxG24HwA&cbp=12,66.92,,0,-3.92 I think this was the site of Mayfield garage : maps.google.com/maps?q=morecambe&ie=UTF8&hl=en&hq=&hnear=Morecambe,+United+Kingdom&ll=54.07626,-2.837139&spn=0.001311,0.004128&z=19&layer=c&cbll=54.076144,-2.837083&panoid=hPhYbfUN9Ml026rE7UDViQ&cbp=12,301.24,,0,-3.25 A couple more things I spotted from streetview - The Elms Hotel has / had a sea view. The question of why "Lakeland" could have something to do with a laundry that was located near Beach St / New Market St. Both Bare Laundry and Lakeland Laundry existed in Morecambe until the 1960's. Could Lakeland have taken over Bare ? maps.google.com/maps?q=morecambe&ie=UTF8&hl=en&hq=&hnear=Morecambe,+United+Kingdom&ll=54.078741,-2.841037&spn=0.001311,0.004128&t=h&z=19&layer=c&cbll=54.078741,-2.841037&panoid=ix2YQOYLreyXWPoKCbjcGQ&cbp=12,164.14,,0,0 Anyone remember this being a bank ? From the Photo with the old cars, it certainly could be the Old Elms Hotel. Peter you spent your youth in Bare village, and I agree with you that your Street View image is where 'Mayfield Garage' was. I can also remember Parrs Bakery and sweet shop and the blacksmiths and the fish and chip shop.... Happy days.
Re the Bank on the promenade, we believe it may have been a National Westminster branch.
