Someone really must try to pluck up the courage to explore Morecambe a bit more! How about trying that new cafe down by the Battery? If the weather is warm you could cool off by running through a fountain or two - but not the most obvious. Dave has been past and close to this statue a few times but I don't recall him ever having photographed it. (for an extra clue check out one of his walks last July 2nd)

From that clue, the only thing I can think of is the statue of the swimmer. It is the right colour but I wouldn't know which bit of it.

The swimmer is Cmbr G Forsberg a renowned long distance swimmer. When I was around 15 or 16 myself and another young lad Richard Palmer rowed the support dinghy when he completed the first double cross bay swim ( Morecambe - Grange - Morecambe). Dick Woodhouse a Morecambe fisherman was the main support vessel in his boat.

Yes it is Commander Charles Gerald Forsberg OBE RN (rtd)who swam across the bay a total of 29 times. His retirement wish was to "sit facing the wonderful Morecambe Bay and imbibe the matchless view" which is why I find it slightly ironic that the statue of him swimming aross the bay has him facing inland! The pic is of the left eye of his goggles semi submerged in the water. Here's the full image.

Am I right in saying that the statue was moved when they did the changes to the prom near Battery?

I don't know. I don't honestly remember seeing it before - but then we've already noticed how observant I'm not. ;D
