You are on the right lines - it is a well know Yorkshire pass time

Is it an obstacle course? (Maybe they can't think of many different obstacles in Yorkhire)

Coachman almost got the idea of the game but what is it?

The tops of the wooden boxes are removed when the game is in progress. They are there to stop the contents drying up. (In Yorkshire? is that likely?)

I have been asking every Yorkshire person I have met - and asked all three of them to help!
Two games come to mind, the first is "Conger Cuddling" and the second, "Flonking the dwile" (Apparently, a Conger eel is not a necessity which is handy as the canals in Yorkshire are probably a bit short of Congers at the mo) - - but it could explain why the dampness has to be kept in under the platforms?

Is it an early form of cricket?

I thought it might be something like horse shoe chucking but why you would need to keep the ground damp for that is beyond me.

It is not Conger Eel Wrestling, Piddle Peddlin or Find The Firkin Car Keys. You are on the right lines with the following suggestions:-
I thought the game was more well known than this or it may be me who has spent too much time in the White Rose County for a Red Rose lad.

I've visited the 'other side' on more than one occasion but this is totally beyond me.
Can't wait to find out what it is.
