The October 2008 issue of Lancashire Life has a feature on Carnforth, centred around the famous railway station which featured in the film 'Brief Encounter', starring Celia Johnson and Trevor Howard. The station buildings have been lovingly restored in recent years, along with the original clock under which the ill fated lovers met, and now contain a visitors centre and shops. Next month there will be celebrations to commemorate the restoration with 1940s themed events including exhibitions and a jazz band. It all starts on October 17th. We have spent many a happy school summer holiday in Carnforth and the surrounding area and taken a fascinated interest in the restoration of the station where it is now possible to have a cuppa in the refreshment room where most of the storyline of Brief Encounter theoretically took place. (In actual fact it was filmed on a studio set but the external filming did take place at Carnforth Station.) If only they could bring Steam Town back................

Re..."If only they could bring Steam Town back................ "
I doubt that it will ever open again, but who knows. I too feel that it is a shame that it had to close. I spent many happy hours there in the past.

It wont open again but Noth West Railways own it and had an open day there a few weeks back and had a load of steam trains on the tracks. I went to it but couldnt get close as the rails were uninpassable in a wheelchair but it was excellent.

Great photos Tim. I just nipped into the posts to make them visible. Ohh if I had loads of money I'd love to set up something there again and have the steam trains on permanent display and maybe chugging up and down for rides like they do in York.

Hi Tim. You were indeed lucky. But of course it would be better to see the train "in steam". Sadly out here there are no railways now, and a very poor inter city bus service.

A couple of years ago when we were up in Scotland we visited the 'Harry Potter' viaduct and the station where you can sometimes see the train chuffing through or indeed go for a ride on it. Alas it wasn't there when we were, but the viaduct is impressive.

I would have loved to see that going past my house! I bet my girls would too. We've all been avid Harry Potter fans ever since the first book.
