Hi All. I have just found and joined up with this forum. My wife and I are now residents of Cyprus. Until about two years ago we lived at Bolton-le Sands. I have lived and worked in the area between Overton and Carnforth all my life, and we still have many friends and family in the area.
Maybe as the membership grows I will get to meet someone from the Bay area that I know from the past.
Best wishes. Trev..

Hi Trev, welcome to the forum. Hopefully as we get more awareness then we'll attract more local residents. You never know who you might come across.

Welcome to the Bayweb Trev, its great to have a member from abroad in such a short time of the Bayweb starting up. If you get the opportunity to encourage your friends and family to join as well, they will certainly be welcome ;D

Hi Mazzerati. The weather here is part cloudy today but still warm, about 27c. I keep up to date with the UK news and weather via "Sky" TV. I see you are due a fine spell. About a week ago we had a day or two when it rained. This was the first rain since May though.
Best wishes. Trev..

Hi all. I have been asked to expand a little upon my History....
Born in Morecambe, and lived in Hawksworth Grove until my early 20s. I went to Sandylands school and Balmoral (Heysham High) I became a joiner when I left school and worked for a number of firms.... J H Jump, Bare lane..... Casson and Walker, Middleton.... C E Small, Carnforth..... R D Greenwood, Carnforth..... and also a little while at the Carnforth Ski / travel shop. Then for the last 12 years or so of my working life I went to work for J C Altham's , Ships Chandlers at Heysham.
Now.... Back to where I have lived. When I got married I lived at Oakville road in Heysham. Then remarried and moved to Oak Avenue Bare. Then we moved to a "Guest house in Clarendon road Morecambe....... And finally to Ash tree grove, Bolton-le- Sands.
I retired early in 2006 on medical grounds, and we moved out to Cyprus. The reasons we chose Cyprus were because of the weather, the lower cost of living and less taxes. In a nutshell we were fed up of the way the UK has gone / changed in the last 20 years.
Yes Cyprus is Sunny.... too much at times. We are in a drought situation with some places having water rationing.
We have just had our council tax bill, for running the village and refuse collection, twice a week. they even collect on Xmas day and New years day. The cost........ uk£150-00.... THATS FOR THE YEAR.
So there you are, you know as much as I do now.
Regards. Trev..

I can see the appeal of Cyprus Trev. What about health care there and do you have any language problems?

Well to answer the second question first. 95% of the time there is no language problem. Some of the older folk in the villages speak no English, but you can always get by. In the main towns English is widely spoken because of tourism. When you live here you should learn the language, but I find it difficult apart from the odd word. Re Health care.... Well I retired early because of angina. We had only been here 5 months when I had a heart attack. I was take to hospital in our car by my wife, (very poor ambulance service here) I was put into intensive care but had a fatal attack. They used the electric pads (twice) and brought me back to life. I have since had a "Stent" put in my heart as an artery was 90% blocked. However now I feel fine and keep taking the tablets. Because I am retired health care is free. I am entitled to the same care as a Cypriot. You can also pay and go private here. it is not as dear as the UK, and is almost instant. BUT.... if you are not retired and trying to earn a living here it can be difficult as the wages are VERY low. If any one requires any info AT ALL. I will gladly tell it as it is. PS eating out is cheap...3 course Cypriot Sunday lunch, with a carafe of wine, and coffee...... Just over UK£10-00. Regards. Trev..

Hi accykeef. The language is Greek with a Cypriot dialect. So if you can speak Greek you would be understood here. My wife went to Greek lessons for nearly a year. Unfortunately she gave up as it became too difficult for her. There are still many people who work in supermarkets (yes we have them) who cannot understand English very well. But we all get by very well language wise. Here is a little more info on every day living. www.orphanides.com.cy/pocket_pleasers/index.htmCheers. Trev..

I can sympathise with your wife. Spoken greek - you stand a chance but when it is written down you have no chance. Easiest way to learn would be to socialise with greek speakers. Arm waving and gestures are internatonal, pity that many brits think that shouting is way to communicate. Learning a new language should be fun but your wife's grounding in the basics should make it easier fo her. Tell her to keep at it, the locals will help her if they know she is keen to learn. How about you? Do you rely on her? I made numerous friends in Spain cus I wanted to learn their language.

Trev's photography and sense of humour on www.cyprusliving.org are legendary. He know's me as LancasterLad. I used to live in Cyprus as well, but it's not for everyone, and anyone contemplating a move should be very cautious and do their homwork very carefully. IMO Trev has made a wise decision to rent over there.

accykeef. I certainly don't rely on my wife, i just get by as best as I can. As I said most speak English any way.
Hi again Peter. I believe that you live down near the south coast now, in sunny UK. We move on Monday to Kallepiea, even higher than Polemi.
Best wishes. Trev..
