I've just been waiting for my car in a local garage reception area.
In came a large sandy haired character with a fluorescent jacket who started to try and sell new tarmac for the garage car park. Listening more carefully, I realised he was not a Serbo Croat with a speech impediment, but was speaking a random mix of Irish and near French.
It all sounded so familiar ........ allo dere musewer ........... we're doing a big job for the council nearby ....... overestimated on tarmac ........ got a couple of lorry loads left over .............. if you need more we can get it ............. be here tomorrow .... moins chere as chips etc etc
Deja vu as we say in England ?

You'd think after all these years in business, tarmac companies would be getting their estimates right ;D

My wife works for www.lirmm.fr/ . They are in the University / Research area in North Montpellier. Apparently she was called down to reception last week to talk to an anglophone whose French was undecipherable. Seems to have been the same Irishman selling tarmac !

They must have a load left - perhaps we should charge them for finding somewhere to dump it.. Our driveway is on my list of things to do as it is cracking and we are regularly targetted by the local 'driveway experts' offering to cover it over with lucky black tarmac. They also pester our elderly neighbours whos' drives are in a similar condition. More than once I have pointed out to them that even if we were considering hiring someone for the job, it would definately not be them doing it.

People do still fall for it though don't they? It's a pity none ever come round here with left over breeze blocks they don't know what to do with. We'd take a few off their hands and hardly charge them anything for doing so. We need to rebuild a wall.
