I'll have a word with my grandad (and mum and auntie) at the weekend and post his (their) history. I know some of it from memory, but I'd probably miss out huge chunks of it.
To keep us going, he was born in Croft Street, my mum was born at (what is now) Queen Victoria Hospital and my auntie was born in Langdale Road. Are any of them sand grow'uns?

My only Morecambe history is that when I was a child we used to go and stay with some people in West End Road who my Mum and Dad knew. They were called Broadhead and the lady's name was Madge. I have no idea what her husband was called.
I remember the illuminations, the Alhambra and Winter Gardens, Moby Dick, the piers, the huge open air swimmng pool, Marineland, the cinema on the front, 2 funfairs and the best doughnuts I've ever tasted.

I've married into a Morecambe family. My wife's mum and dad ran holiday businesses (including a hotel then s-c flats at 370 Marine Rd East - now a hair salon) and my brother-in-law's dad was manager of the Central Pier. We still meet up with her school friends, one comes over from Finland regularly to see his mum, his father ran Pontins (SS Berengeria).
Interesting locals and off-comers in the model railway club. The Hon Treas runs a band I drum with and the Chairman was a railway fireman at Green Ayre in the 60s (steam locos).

Well done by being another 'Sand Grown Un' Dave. Re your work at ICI. The only person I new from there was a tall guy called William (Bill) Bell who lived at Middleton. He was one of the firemen there and also a keen walker. Unfortunately he died of a heart attack when in middle age. Trev.. I think I remember him Trev. If it's who I remember I think that he had just done to Coast to Coast walk with his son (if I recall right) only a month or two before. Dave Yes Dave, you have the correct person., at that time he was my best friend. I remember him doing the coast to coast walk., and I do believe that he actually died of a heart attack whilst on a different walk. Small world. Trev..

I think people born in Langdale road and Croft street may well not be classed as 'Sand Grown uns'..... Unless there was a very strong onshore wind blowing. But Queen Victoria Hospital is certainly within the sound of the Morecambe parish church bells. Trev..

... and the best doughnuts I've ever tasted. I used to make and sell hot dogs, hamburgers and donuts in the kiosks at Barry's cafe. I enjoyed making the donuts because I could eat the misshapes. With practise you could make a lot of misshapes ! The kiosk is still visible here. From the left, the apertures were : Hot dogs, burgers, donuts Main entrance door Ice cream Fruit shop Nougat shop The corner area of pavement also housed Gypsy Sarah's caravan, a mock auction and a "Find your correct Weight" spot run by Tommy on Bank Holidays. my brother-in-law's dad was manager of the Central Pier. I bet he could tell some stories ! I was a young articled clerk assisting on the audit in the early 1970's which was the beginning of the McNulty's period of ownership. What has happened to the McNulties ? Peter
