Back in the 60s, a lot of buildings were constructed here using similar methods. The reinforcing bars started to rust and the concrete cracked. I suppose your climate allows that method of construction to be acceptable.
Do you have a say in what methods are acceptable to local builders?

Not sure if this is the same thing, but my memory is that much of this was caused by poor production of HAC (High Alumina Cement). The setting progress could go wrong leading to weak and porous beams. As these beams tended to be longer than average, public buildings suffered worst together with high humidity installations such as indoor pools, etc.

Hi Peter. Yes I seem to remember something about that. Certainly a lot of the 'modern' buildings have not stood the test of time. And yet many of the 'Coronation Street' type buildings are still with us.

That concrete building looks decidedly iffy. I would worry that it would break if that was mine. The timber frame one looks a lot more sound and I love those external stairs. There does seem to be a huge drop from where that car is parked in the second pic though. Or is that an optical illusion?

I love those grantite worktops and splashback in the kitchen pics. Not sure about the cupboards though. I wouldn't go for that design/colour myself.

We do have some floor to ceiling cupboards in our kitchen and I can NEVER reach anything on the top shelves. It's a foreign country up there to me. Mind you this is an oldish house and our ceilings are very high compared to some. It's funny how the older cottages have lower ceilings and the more modern houses have lower ceilings and when ours was built (Coronation Street era ;) ) they seemed to be catering for 10 foot giants! Maybe that explains why I don't like shopping malls with low suspended ceilings like Blackburn has. They seem to be making that even lower now. It makes me claustrophobic! :(

It is not a car but a type of hoist on a long arm. A bit like the fire engine arms with a basket on the front.

But the drop is very real and the house is definitely built very near the edge

Our bungalow will be built on the top shelf of two pieces of land. But it will be about 3 mts from the edge. The architect will have to visually decide whether we need some king of retaining wall..... more expense.

Tomorrow we go to the Land Registry to see if they have sorted out our boundaries yet.

No, Trev I was meaning the car in this one. I probably confused you by starting off talking about the concrete building and then th timber framed one.

Ah, Yes I see what you mean now. where the picture is taken from is part way up the drive. Yes it is very steep and when you are on the road that passes the plot you are about level with the highest point of the roof. The black boards in the foreground are shuttering for a retaining wall to stop the ground falling to the house.

This is a friends property that they are living in now. The outside steps lead to a separate lounge, kitchen, bedroom and bathroom. A very good idea for when visitors come. The first time we visited I could not drive back up the slope. I had to let the car roll back and have a second run at it. But that was mainly because it was loose earth then.

Cheers. Trev..

Goodness me. It is 15 days since I added to this thread of mine. Well let me try and make amends.

On the land and building front, there is not a lot going on. It is like someone has pressed the Pause button and we are still waiting.
Yes we are still trying to get some different prices, both for Kitchens and Bathrooms.
Some of the biggest estimates that we have got are around twice the lowest ones. But lowest is not always the best, you have also to look at the quality we are getting. For instance we have a price of about € 900 for a offset corner bath, but this is 'Ideal Standard'. Some others are about half that cost. People here know about corner baths, but are not sure what is meant by offset. But a drawing soon puts that right.

One thing about our land that I have discovered is that it already is, or it is a proposal that it is classified as in a 20% build zone. It was classified as 10% when we bought it over 2 years ago. We will have to make enquiries as to how it may affect us. My guess is not at all, unless it makes the land a little more valuable as more could be built on it.

I Will add some pictures now. The first is views from a kitchen showroom. The second one is the new 20% zone that our land is on. Our plot is 818 in the centre of the 20%.
And the last picture is a view from the village we are in at the moment, Northwards to the coast and sea at Latchi and Polis. This picture shows what a lovely day it has been here. I was outside at lunchtime eating my Turkey, tomato and lettuce salad.

This reminds me of the vast difference to the weather that has been experienced in the last 24 hrs in Cumbria. How those people have suffered, including at least one policeman dead.
My heart goes out to them, and their families.

Regards. Trev..
