Bowness after the floods « Result #1 Yesterday at 10:37am »
3rd December 2009
We had to pay a visit to Lakeland (Plastics) of Windermere for a present for Edith's brother. Fortunately for me they didn't have the item she wanted....which left us more time for a walk around the waterfront area at Bowness on Windermere. Although the area had been badly affected by the recent floods we were pleased to see that things were moving forward at a brisk pace and many places affected are open and doing business. Pictures from the visit are now on the website and located in the "Visions of Cumbria" section. Regards, Dave
Morning Trev. How much will the B+B be. And will you be picking up at the Airport.
Good morning to you. In answer to the first question... Quite a lot to recoupe capital expenditure. And re the colection at the airport...of course. We still have to work out the cost per person. And how many bags will there be to weigh.
NOTE TO SELF. Remember to put the bathroom scales in the Mini.

The cable used in Christmas tree lights is quite thin and is subject to the effects of electromagnetic spiralling, where the inner cores of the cable slowly contrct as they cool. Thus causes them to very slowly tangle themselves up. Experts used to advise soaking them in soapy water before trying to untangle them but it is now accepted that the best way is to wrap them loosely round something ie. a shoe box or a large spider if one is available.
As for the baubles, that will forever remain a Yuletide mystery.

Hi all. Well I am sorry that I have not been on for the last few days. The reason is that we are between a Rock and a hard place. We have had the estimate from one (the preferred) builder.
The problem is that we cannot afford the price. To say we are devastated is and understatement. We really do not know what to do at the moment. The price included the long concrete drive, a double garage and a wall all around the land. So we knocked those items off the quote. Yes we can just afford that we thought.
BUT... then we noticed that there were no windows or doors priced, or any electrics or central heating.
We have another quote due in a few days but that is for the inner framework coming from Scotland by container ship. We are not hopeful but we shall see.
So if I am missing or a bit quiet, then at least you know why.
The Canal at Hest Bank « Result #12 on Dec 4, 2009, 9:37am »
2nd December 2009 Local
Edith had two appointments today, one at 9:30am and the other at 2pm so we were unable to go anywhere to far away. After her first appointment we drove to Hest Bank for a short walk of about 3miles or thereabouts along the Lancaster Canal.
Pictures from this short walk are now available to view on the website and are located in the "Local Pictures" section. Regards, Dave

30th November 2009 Lake District
A short walk in the Little Langdale area today gave us the most glorious views of the snow topped Fairfield and Helvellyn Fells. This coupled with a visit to the delectable Slater Bridge and Hodge Close made it a walk I will long remember. Pictures from the walk are now available to view on the website along with the route description and are located in the “Last Walk” section. Regards, Dave

Hi Keith. I wonder who ate the other half.....
I have been to the Electric board today and enquired about the cost. The lady looked up o her computer and said that the poles will follow the road / track, and there will need to be another transformer. So that at least explains why it is so dear.
She also said that if within the next 5 years someone else comes to live nearby and uses 'our' wires we will get part of the cost back when they pay to be connected.
I don't think I will hold my breath. Our nearest neighbours at the moment would be nearly half a mile away.

I know where you live!!!! Ha Ha Never know the next thing we will pop up via appointment of course. Given the correct amount of notification and as long as the moon is in line with Jupiter. Keeping away from Uranus. Hope that you are all ok in sunny Morecambe were God shines on the righteous, or only those who can see the church from the kitchen window. Peace be with you as I was in the Navy you know.

It's good to see that the water has gone down a lot. Looking at the damage and where the reeds and weeds are caught up on railings makes you realise just how much water there must have been. Lets hope the weather lets up a bit and gives people a chance to start getting sorted out a bit. We still have an awful lot of winter to come yet though haven't we.
Re the refreshment distributors, we were there about 3 hours including setting up and waiting until the last person had passed on the return leg. We never thought about sitting down. We were kept fairly busy because the runners grabbed a drink and then threw the cup down anywhere up to 50 mts away. Of course we had to collect all the cups (litter).
Ah, I can see that chairs would not really be appropriate or necessary. I had visions of you hanging about there all day with just the odd person appearing now and again. I really must try to understand what a half marathion is!
CRIKEY! that electricity connection sounds ridiculously expensive, but I can see it making more sense for them to go round the edge of the plot rather than marching straight across as the crow flies. No doubt they have to avoid any potential areas of buildings.
Good luck with grant hunting. It does pay to be in contact with people who have had similar experiencesand can point you in the right direction doesn't it? Obviously the generator wouldn't be a viable option though as it would cost you even more to run thatthan you would save by getting a grant. I suppose this is what comes of building on a brand new plot where the hand of man has not previously set foot. Lovely spot though.

28th November 2009 Arnside & Silverdale AONB
The first decent day for a number of days and we couldn’t move far because of other commitments. However we did find time to fit in this short local walk. Our original choice had been to go up Warton Crag to see how badly the Carnforth & Warton areas had flooded but as we drove along the promenade at Morecambe we could see that Lakeland was wearing a white cap with the first decent fall of snow, This made us change our minds and go for Arnside Knott as it offers better views of Lakeland. Pictures from the walk are now available on the website located in the “Last Walk” section. Many thanks to all the people who have contacted us by e_mail regarding the Cumbrian floods, I am working my way through them and all will be answered. Regards, Dave

O.M.G. I think my witness protection cover has been blown here. May have to relocate ( what gives your adoptive children the right to know where you live ) Is it still snowing in Owdam ?

Hi Peter. We are registered with a couple of dealers, but not the one you mention. We have moved money across a few times now. The problem is that (of course) the currency exchange companies have to make some money so it is reflected in the rate. Also we have found that the money is in 'no mans land' for between 5 to 7 days.
We use 3 Nationwide Flexaccount cards that we have and we can almost get € 1,000per day. It is a very good rate of exchange (Visa) and there are no charges at all for using the card. Of course Nationwide need to make a profit also............ They should be managing OK by charging + 7% on loans, but ONLY giving us )0.45% on savings. To say I am unhappy with their savings rated is an understatement.

Hello Musky. I have visited Morecambe for the first time this year with a friend. It was a really fun day out. What is the area like to live in, work etc.
So each day, for the last few days we have been going to an ATM here and drawing out the maximum amount which for us is around €960. I then go in the bank and put the money in a Cyprus account so that I can write a cheque.
Don't know if this will help, but people here have found they can save quite a bit using dedicated currency dealers.

Hi all.
Well it seems that electricity wise at least, I am between a rock and a hard place. We have made enquiries about obtaining a grant toward the cost of installing the electricity. The good news is that we can apply for a grant. The bad news is that we can't apply until we have moved into the completed dwelling. And we cannot apply for electricity until we have the grant authorized. This means that we would have no electricity when we moved in and (from others) probably not for around 12 months. We would have to have a generator and run that and of course pay for the diesel. And when I say a generator I mean a BIG one on wheels, about the size of a small car. I have been told that the cost of the diesel is about € 500 per month.
Regretfully finance wise, I do not think we will be going down that road.
So each day, for the last few days we have been going to an ATM here and drawing out the maximum amount which for us is around €960. I then go in the bank and put the money in a Cyprus account so that I can write a cheque. Next week we will go and see the Electricity company to make sure that the price is correct. However when I have put on a map and shown 150mts for the wires to rum, that was as the crow flies. If they follow the road / track then I can see that it will take more poles hence it will be dearer.
Strangely for me I have no fresh pictures to put on. However the main forum that I am on in Cyprus have just installed a web cam at a small port called Latchi. This is the link to the 4 web cams which are not live but are regularly refreshed.... http://cyprusliving.org/webcam/webcam.php
Because they are live you will see very little at night.
The first one 'Trimithousa' is the view from the forum owners house up into the hills, north of Paphos. The second one is the GOOD one. This is the view over Latchi Harbour. There are two others as well.
Ambleside after the floods « Result #25 on Nov 27, 2009, 8:49am »
Yesterday we paid a visit to Ambleside, primarily to do some shopping but also for a walk around to see how the town had fared in the recent floods. Fortunately it as fared a lot better than those in the north of the county, the main damage seemingly at Waterhead and around Rothay Bridge. I have just uploaded the pictures from the day to the website and they are located in the "Other Pictures" section.
